Celebrating Black-Owned Businesses in Halifax and Nova Scotia

February is Black History Month! To celebrate Black artisanship and entrepreneurship in the province, we’d like to hear from you: what are your favourite Black-owned businesses in Halifax and Nova Scotia? Check out the Hive To Home Instagram page to let us know. Comment your favourite Black-owned business in Halifax and tag a friend to be entered to win a $100 gift card to the business in your comment. Your comment will be entered in a random draw and three winners will be chosen. Enter by February 27th and we’ll announce the winners by February 28th on Instagram.

Check out these directories too – there’s something for everyone.

A thriving local economy needs a wide variety in small businesses. The benefits of shopping local are numerous, for not only our economy but also our communities. Check out this article from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance – they’ve compiled a set of studies proving how supporting your local economy can contribute to social capital, greater economic returns, better wages for workers and better uses of public subsidies.

As we believe at Hive To Home, it’s valuable to know where your items have come from and who they are made by. When you imagine the process of designing, sourcing materials and creating an object, you’re more understanding of how material things can be precious, non-replaceable and non-disposable.
